And this story began in the distant 1550, when the Russian Tsar Ivan 4, later called Grozny, decided to establish a fortress city on the territory of the enemy state of the Kazan Khanate, as an outpost of Russian troops before the capture of Kazan. Since then, Sviyazhsk is considered the first Russian city on the territory of the Kazan region and the cradle of Orthodoxy of these places.
The history of Sviyazhsk is the story of my family, who lived in this county city since 1902. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother lived here, my grandfather and his brothers and sisters were born. And our family always remembers those difficult years of regime change, the Red Terror and the tragic years of war. But at the same time, it is a wonderful time for the formation of our family’s life in this extraordinary place of prayer, where each stone preserves the history of the Middle Ages.
Sviyazhsk belongs to small historical cities of Russia, having the exact date of foundation - May 24, 1551.
Visiting Sviyazhsk, we will see the greatest creations of human hands - architectural structures of two monasteries of the 16th-19th centuries and the only monument of wooden architecture of the 16th century - the Church of the Holy Trinity, which this year turned 468 years old. We will walk through the streets of the old district city of the 19th century, inhale the environmentally friendly air of this place and admire the picturesque beauty of the high bank of the Volga.
