Monument to Korolev and Gagarin
ooh Chekhova, Taganrog, Russia
Description:
The monument to Korolev and Gagarin is a majestic bronze sculpture made by O.K. Komov. It was installed on Chekhov Street in front of the building of the Taganrog Institute of Technology. The author, wishing to emphasize the importance of the world’s first human spaceflight, made Gagarin slightly taller than the Queen, despite the rather small height of the first.
The monument was created in 1975 and was shown at the Moscow exhibition. After its closure, the sculpture was donated to the Taganrog Art Gallery by the Soviet Culture Foundation, where it was housed in a collection of park sculpture.
E.V. Zaitsev, a former employee of TRTI, a state and party figure, became the main initiator of the appearance of this sculpture in Taganrog. It was decided to place the monument at the intersection of Ukrainian lane and Petrovskaya street. It was installed without a pedestal, directly on the lawn. Since then, in conversations, the quarter began to be mentioned as the square of astronauts.
The monument was moved to its present location only in 2002, on the 50th anniversary of the Radio University, and the Central Children's Playground is now located in its old place.
