Monument to Peter the First
Russia, Rostov region, Taganrog, Cape opposite the harbor.
Description:
The monument to Peter the Great in Taganrog of the Rostov region was made by the famous Russian sculptor Mark Matveevich Antokolsky at the request of the Taganrog City Duma, which was handed over by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov during a personal meeting with the sculptor in Paris.
The monument was cast in the workshops of the Thibaut brothers in Paris, and the pedestal to it was made in 1901 by the artist Boris Vasilyevich Edouards, owner of an art workshop in Odessa.
The location of the monument was chosen at the gates of the city garden on Petrovskaya Street.
The grand opening took place on May 14, 1903 in the presence of citizens and guests of the city. The figure of Peter the Great in full growth, dressed in a uniform, was installed on a granite pedestal. Peter’s gaze turned to the harbor, on the construction of which he devoted much effort and attention. On the front side of the monument is an inscription: "To Emperor Peter I, Taganrog 1698-1898".
In 1924, the monument was moved to the lobby of the Anton Pavlovich Chekhov City Library, and in 1933 - to the Local History Museum. In 1940, the monument was erected on a cape opposite the harbor, where it is now located.
