Pavlovsk fortress is a bright example of a fortification structure designed by the engineering and mathematical method. Today, only the base of the fortress, four bastions, moats and ramparts remain.
The construction of the fortress was started in 1697 by order of Peter I to protect Taganrog from the raids of the Tatars. In terms of the structure had a quadrangular shape, was surrounded by a shaft with four bastions and a moat. The fortress served as a base for the Russian fleet in the southern seas. Soon the fortress lost its defensive value and the main part of its buildings was destroyed, only the base survived, which allows you to see the scale of the fortress.
