Chekhov Shop Museum
Rostov region, Taganrog, str. Alexandrovskaya, 100
About the company:
Museum "Chekhov Shop" is located in a two-storey brick house built in the 50s of the XIX century.
The Chekhov family rented this house from the merchant I.G. Moiseev from 1869 to 1874. The move was connected with the trade interests of Pavel Egorovich Chekhov. On the first floor was the shop of the father, on the second floor - living rooms.
Anton Chekhov lived here from 9 to 14 years. These years left vivid memories in the life of the writer: long hours of sitting in the grocery store of his father, participation in rehearsals of the church choir, first theatrical impressions and home performances.
The period of A.P. Chekhov’s life in the “Moses House” found a response in the works: “Vanka”, “Kashtanka”, “Proper Measures”, “The History of a Trading Enterprise”, “Wedding”, “Singers”, “Dumper”, “Heavy People”, “Father of the Family”, “Fat and Thin”, “Surgery”, “Steppe” and others.
On November 3, 1977, a museum was opened here to show the environment in which the future writer’s childhood and adolescence took place. The exposition presents the interiors of P.E. Chekhov’s shop, the family’s living rooms. Among the exhibits of the museum are documents with autographs of the future writer, his brothers and father, family photos of the 1870s; genuine paintings by N. P. Chekhov, household items from the family and close associates of the Chekhovs.
It is part of the Taganrog State Literary and Historical-Architectural Museum-Reserve.
