Tikhvin

The history of the city of Tikhvin, located within the Volkhov lowland and the Veps highland, on the Tikhvinka River, 200 km from St. Petersburg, has more than VI centuries.

Unique monuments of history and culture have been preserved on the territory of the city: Tikhvin Big Bogoroditsky Assumption Monastery with the Assumption Cathedral (XVI century), Vvedensky Women's Monastery "Fortress - Prison" (XVI century), Spaso - Transfiguration Cathedral (XVIII century), Znamenskaya Church (XVIII century), State House - Museum of N.A. Rimsky - Korsakov.

In 2004, one of the Russian shrines, the miraculous Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, returned from Chicago to its place - to the Tikhvin Big Bogoroditsky Dormition Monastery.
