Abalak monastery
Abalak village, Tobolsk district, Tyumen region, Russia
Description:
Abalak Monastery is an architectural monument of federal importance, located in the Tyumen region, twenty kilometers southeast of Tobolsk. The monastery complex is very beautiful, so it attracts not only Orthodox pilgrims, but also secular tourists.
Abalak Monastery was founded in 1783, but this place has been used by the Orthodox Church since 1636. Originally there was a simple wooden temple, but soon a whole complex was built around it, including the Znamensky Cathedral, the temple of Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the temple of Mary of Egypt. All these buildings are perfectly preserved to our days.
Abalak Monastery experienced difficult times in the early 20th century, when church valuables were seized by the Bolsheviks, and religious buildings were transferred to secular organizations. For a long time the monastery housed a boarding school, but in 1989 the temple complex was returned to the ownership of the Church. Today, the Abalak monastery is experiencing its heyday and is a very popular attraction of the Tyumen region.
