Church of Michael the Archangel

Tobolsk, Tyumen region, Russia

Description:

The Church of Michael the Archangel is one of the many architectural and cultural attractions of Tobolsk. It was built in 1745 on the site of a wooden dilapidated temple. The lower part of the monastery was insulated and used in winter, it was named after John the Theologian and consecrated in 1749. The upper part of the church was used in the summer, it was consecrated only 10 years later. The construction of the temple was finally completed in 1759.

The church was built on the example of the churches of the Russian North - on the second floor of the building is a closed massive staircase gallery. The temple is especially attractive by its long stone fence with an openwork metal lattice-venzel, made in typical Elizabethan Baroque forms.

30 years later, a chapel was built on the north side of the church in honor of the Three Ecumenical Hierarchs and Teachers. In the 1930s, the bell tower was dismantled. In the 1960s, the church housed the Art Cinema, and in the second half of the 1980s the temple was restored and acquired its former appearance. It is currently in operation.
