Church of the Seven Youths of Ephesus
Tobolsk, Tyumen region, Russia
Description:
One of the many architectural and cultural attractions of Tobolsk is the Church of the Seven Youths of Ephesus, built in 1776 at the Zavalny Cemetery at the expense of Governor D.I. Chicherin. The stone temple was built in a fairly short time. It is known that it was laid on August 4, 1775, and exactly a year later consecrated.
In its appearance, the modest cemetery church bears the features of classicism and baroque. At its base lies a four-piece carrying a dome. From the west it is adjacent to the bell tower and refectory. In the internal space, the room of the monastery is cut off from the light drum using a flat ceiling. In the middle of the XIX century, the building underwent a major restoration. In 1910, a northern chapel was added to the church in the name of Seraphim of Sarov.
Art historians believe that the church has preserved the original baroque iconostasis of the XVIII century. Among the local shrines in recent years, the image of the Mother of God “Pochaevskaya” manifested on the glass is especially famous.
