Church of Zechariah and Elizabeth
Tobolsk, Tyumen region, Russia
Description:
One of the many attractions of Tobolsk is the wooden Church of Zacharias and Elizabeth, built in 1752. The author of the temple project is not established, it is known that the works were headed by the famous Tobolsk master Andrei Gorodnichev. The monastery is located in an open place, so it is well visible from everywhere and dominates among the buildings adjacent to the square.
A huge two-storey temple with a rich variety of decor and a solemn monumental composition belongs to the best examples of "Siberian Baroque". All its volumes - chapels with semicircular apses, as well as a four-piece with a five-sided apse and a two-storey porch with chambers - are merged together, forming a weighty monolith. Two spherical vaults of the church, placed one on top of another, form a sufficiently high stepped dome bearing a light drum with a small headboard. This beautiful summer church is distinguished by the rise and height of its space, as well as the abundance of light and expressive plastic vault. Unfortunately, her iconostasis and utensils were lost. The main attraction here is the icon “Joy of All Who Sorrow”.
