Description:
The building, located in the central part of the Tobolsk Kremlin, is the Palace of the Viceroyal, it is from here that the whole of Siberia was governed for centuries. It is located on the foundations of the former Order Chamber, where Governor Matvey Petrovich Gagarin ruled. By his order, the throne of the great Russian autocrat Catherine the Second was specially delivered to Tobolsk. It was a symbol of state power in Siberia.
In 1831, the Palace of the Viceroy suffered from a fire, but soon it was restored, this did not affect the administrative functions performed in it. There was an office, state chamber and provincial government. Many important decisions affecting the life of the city were made here: the construction of a city theater, a prison castle and a male gymnasium. In 1870, in one of the halls of the palace, a museum was opened dedicated to the history of the formation of the city and the rule of local authorities. Now in the Palace of the Viceroy there are expositions dedicated to the management of Siberia, clothes of the palace and famous people who visited here.
