Pokrovsky Winter Cathedral

Red Square, Tobolsk, Tyumen region, Russia

Description:

Pokrovsky Winter Cathedral is located near the cathedral, it was founded in 1743 under Metropolitan Anthony the Second Narozhnitsky. The construction of the temple lasted three years, and in 1746 the building was consecrated. In the appearance of the cathedral there are many atypical motifs in Siberian temple building, this is due primarily to the influence of a new style - Baroque. Most of the churches built during this period are built in this style.

The cathedral has a facade complicated by many ledges and buildings, made in small proportions. Upon careful inspection, you can notice that the main part is made in the form of a cross, in the center of which there is a low drum with a figure dome. The interior of the temple consists of one large rectangular hall with two niches on the sides. All vaults here are made without supporting columns, windows and doors are made in the form of arches. Most of the icons in the temple are of late origin, and the largest shrine is the ancient iconostasis located in the eastern part of the cathedral.
