Our Lady-Alexeyev Monastery
Description:
The Mother of God Alekseevskaya Monastery, built in 1662, is considered one of the oldest functioning Orthodox monasteries in the south of Siberia. It is located in Tomsk on Yurtachnaya Hill, at the mouth of the Big Kyrgyz River. Here, in 1658, a small wooden church was cut down in the name of Alexius the man of God, but it completely burned down after a lightning strike. On the site was built the first stone temple and founded the male Virgin Alekseevsky monastery. In its time, it was this monastery that became the center of the spread of Orthodoxy in near Pritomy.
Within its walls, the first Russian Theological School in the city was founded. In 1776, a church was laid in honor of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, which became one of the first stone buildings in the city. For the bell tower at the temple was cast a huge bell, which was called - "Big". It weighs 300 poods. The main shrine of the temple is the carved cancer with the relics of St. Fyodor of Tomsk.
Every Sunday an Akathist is celebrated in the temple to St. Theodor, during which every believer is anointed with consecrated oil from a lampada burning in front of the tomb of St. Theodor. Despite the fact that in 1928 the entire territory of the monastery was completely given under the protection of the state, the bell tower was destroyed and the church itself was partially dismantled. Part of the territory was transferred to the pedagogical school N2 and built up with new houses. The monastery and temples have been restored since 1979, but it is no longer possible to fully recreate its original appearance.
