New Cathedral Square
Russia, Tomsk, Lenin Avenue (TUSUR)
Description:
This place is a witness of important events for the city for several generations: revolutionary rallies and demonstrations, Soviet demonstrations and parades, the beginning and end of the Great Patriotic War.
The Trinity Cathedral, which gave the modern name of the square, was dismantled during the war, but the memory of this Siberian shrine has survived to this day. Now in this place is the Trinity square, occupying most of the area.
One of the attractions of the square is the Upper Deli, built in the early XIX century by Innocent Gadalov. The square is also decorated with the majestic building of the provincial government, erected more than 150 years ago. In early revolutionary times, the Sovdep, Sovnarkhoz, and since 1928 the SFTI was the Siberian Physics and Technology Institute (the country’s first scientific and technical institute).
Next to the House of Scientists - another beautiful building located on the square - is the entrance to the city garden. Also on the square there is a musical fountain and many monuments - a stele in honor of those killed in the Second World War, a monument to St. Tatiana, a stone at the base of the chapel in memory of the destroyed Trinity Cathedral.
