Planetarium

prosp. Lenina, 82-a, building 1, Tomsk

Description:

The Tomsk Planetarium on Lenin Avenue is one of the first three planetariums opened in the Soviet Union. Initially, there was only one planetarium in the country, it was located in Moscow. In 1947, the State University received the trophy optical instrument "Planetarium" produced by the famous company "Carl Zeiss Jena". Despite the post-war difficulties, the necessary funds were found, as well as a building in which a full-fledged planetarium could be equipped.

The Academic Council of Tomsk University decided to use a unique device not only for teaching students of astronomical specialty, but also to open free access to the public. First, the equipment was installed in the premises of the former house church of the Tomsk bishop in the building of the local history museum. In September 1950, a grand opening took place. In 1980, the Tomsk Planetarium acquired the status of an independent regional cultural institution and moved to a new building, in which it remains to this day.
