Lenin Square
Description:
Lenin Square is the oldest and most important square in Tomsk. At different times, the square bore the names of the Epiphany, Gostinodvorsk, Iversk and Bazaar squares.
The Cossacks, who founded the city, camped here in 1604. In 1777, the Epiphany Cathedral was built on the square and over time the square is settled around the church: a frontal place, shops, a square hut and other structures are built here. In this place, the merchants and, accordingly, the whole people gathered, as evidenced by the old name of the square (Bazarnaya). The pre-revolutionary appearance of the square was formed by the Gostiny Dvor, Flour Building, City Council, Exchange Building, Iveron Chapel and other important buildings.
Lenin Square, which has been named since 1959, has undergone significant changes. Many of the old buildings are gone and new ones have grown in their place.
