Borisogleb Monastery

Russia, Torzhok, Staritskaya Street, 9

Description:

Being the oldest in its region, the Novotorzh Men's Borisogleb Monastery belongs to the Tver diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and is located in the city of Torzhka (Tver region), on Staritskaya Street, 7.

The oldest surviving monastery building is the Vvedenskaya church of the XVII century, which replaced the original wooden building burned by the Poles.

The Borisogleb monastery in Torzhka suffered significant destruction during a large-scale fire in 1742. The construction of a new architectural monastic group, the project of which belonged to the well-known architect Nikolai Alexandrovich Lvov, took several years - from 1785 to 1796. Then in the building for a long time there was a maximum security prison.

Only in 1993 the Borisogleb monastery was returned to believers.
