The Temple of Michael the Archangel

Tver region, Torzhok, Republican Per., 3

Description:

On a high hill in Torzhka stands the temple of Archangel Michael (Annunciation). Its blue domes are visible from afar in the vicinity of the town. Once there was a peninsula that was washed by several streams.

The temple building dates back to 1864. Some sources claim that it existed before the 17th century. The author of the project is architect Alexandrov. After 23 years, the bell tower (architect Nazarin) was also built. The rich interior of the church still amazes visitors. Iconostasis of gold, marble walls, five-domed roof. In the pre-war years, the relics of Saints Ethimus and Arkady were kept here. After the church closed in 1936, they were seized by local authorities, and what happened next is unknown. The temple is also called the Annunciation, since the reopening took place in 1946 before the great feast of the Annunciation.

Until 1995, the church was the only one in the city that was revered by all parishioners. You can get to Torzhok by bus from Tver, by train or by your own transport.
