Rotunda (Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross)
Description:
The Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Torzhka, well known also under the same name as the Rotunda Chapel, served as a replacement for the wooden chapel of Sofia the Prewiss and is located on the commercial square (January 9 Square), near the coastline of the Tvertsy River.
This building, consisting of twelve columns and having a couple of domes at once, was built according to the project of the famous architect Nikolai Anatolyevich Lvov (in 1811-1814), but after the death of the author.
It is noteworthy that in the dungeon of the rotunda there is a holy well. During the XIX century, the chapel was known as the Life-Creating Cross, and in the XX century the building was supplemented by an altar and a bell tower, which was originally completely devoid of windows. A little less than twenty years ago, the chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Lord was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Borisogleb monastery.
