Cathedral of Boris and Gleb
Russia, Tver region, Torzhok city, Staritskaya street, 9
Description:
The pearl of Torzhok is called the Cathedral of Boris and Gleb. In Torzhka between 1015 and 1053 a temple was laid. At the direction of Empress Catherine the Second, the construction of a new cathedral on this site was started instead of the dilapidated one. She also laid the first stone in 1785, passing from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
The construction lasted 14 years, led by architects Nikolai Lvov and Franz Butsi. The temple came out majestic: the main dome is gilded, a cross of gold, a rich interior, columns of old stone. The iconostasis was hand-carved, also trimmed with chervo gold. There were thirty-seven beautiful icons in the temple. Currently, the cathedral is closed, paintings, icons, domes are almost completely lost. The temple needs complete reconstruction. The only surviving icon of Borovikovsky “Parable of wise and unreasonable virgins” was transported to the art gallery of Tver.
You can get to Torzhok from Tver by bus, train, by car.
