Stepana Razin Embankment
Tver, Embankment of Stepana Razin
Description:
On the right bank of the Volga in the center of Tver is the embankment of Stepan Razin. It runs along the coast from the intersection with Volnoy Novgorod Street and Free Lane in the western part to Smolensk Lane in the eastern part. The entire embankment is an architectural monument with a building of the type of “solid facade” with preserved buildings of the early XVIII century. The project of this river bank was developed by a group of architects headed by P.R. Nikitin. Stone houses, which are a single architectural ensemble characteristic of the construction of the embankments of the northern capital, it began to be built in the middle of 1760.
The project of “solid development” was supposed to capture the whole city, but the Tver merchants spoke out against the new architectural manner. They were familiar with the usual plan of the city, when between the estates of neighbors there were separation gaps and private possessions. The only place in the city, in which a new fashionable development was implemented, remained the embankment of Stepan Razin.
Since 1810, the entire right bank was the pier of the Vyshnevolotsky water system, and before the appearance of the cargo port and passenger river station, the embankment was filled with ships. Later it became a pedestrian zone and a favorite place for walking and resting with citizens. The banks were fortified from erosion by a granite parapet. Among the most famous attractions on the embankment should be noted the Zvezda cinema, the house of Voroshilov riflemen and the Khozinsky estate.
