The Traveling Palace

city Tver, Sovetskaya street, house 3

Description:

Travel Palace in Tver was built in 1763-1777, in its construction took part such famous architects as M.F. Kazakov and P.R. Nikitin.

The palace is made in the Baroque style and was originally intended for the rest of the royal family and retinue on the way from St. Petersburg to Moscow (hence the name).

The palace was built on the site of the bishop’s house burned down in 1763, on the territory of the Tver Kremlin.

Travel Palace is one of the most beautiful monuments of architecture of Russia. The layout of the palace is a “room”: the central building, where there is a grand two-colored hall, the western and eastern wings, two cross-shaped in terms of the pavilion - the Church of the Great Martyr Catherine and the iconostasis of V.L. Borovikovsky. To our time, unfortunately, no two-storey service wing, consisting of one-storey wings and the central part, and magnificent stables and carriage shed.

Today, the building of the palace houses the State United Historical, Architectural and Literary Museum and the Tver Regional Picture Gallery.
