The Church of the Ascension of the Lord
Description:
The Cathedral Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Tver belongs to the Bishops’ Compound, is located in the very center of the city. This is one of the most famous temples of the Tver region, now it houses the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God and the icon "Mutchaya Mountain". The original icons were lost, these are newly painted icons, but they are no less revered by parishioners.
The church was built in 1749-1760 in stone. And earlier on this site stood a wooden Church of the Ascension, which in 1747 burned from fire. In the XVIII century, two Tver merchants - I.F. Tatarintsev and F.N. Bobrov allocated funds for the redevelopment of the church. It was rebuilt according to the project of architect I.F. Lvov. The style of architecture of the temple is late classicism.
Like many churches, the temple was closed after the revolution in the thirties and was used as a warehouse. Then the temple was transferred to the museum, and in the seventies it was made an exhibition hall. 1993 is the year of the return of the Church of the Orthodox Diocese. The temple is now in operation.
