New Yeltsy Manor

lake Seliger, Ostashkovsky district, Tver region.

Description:

The estate appeared at the end of the XVIII century. The ancient family of Tolstoys until the end of their days owned the patrimony, passing it from generation to generation. The estate built a manor house in three floors of stone, a stone church, a linen factory, a theater, a tannery and a boat base, which carried out the transportation of guests from the island to the ground. All this rich industry worked until the abolition of serfdom.

At the end of the XVIII century in Yeltsy was born the best friend of the poet A.S. Pushkin - Yakov Tolstoy. He was also a member of the Green Lamp group. During the war against the French in 1812, Yakov went to defend his homeland, but he never returned to Yeltsy. Fearing persecution, he moved to Paris, where he was buried.

To this day, only a luxurious manor house has survived, the facade of which is decorated with pilaster porticoes, protrusions and rotundas. In Soviet times, several extensions were attached to the building. This visually increased the length of the house.
