Estate Stepanovskoye-Volosovo
Volosovo, Tver region, Zubtsovsky district
Description:
Stepanovskoye-Volosovo is interesting because the brilliant architect Giacomo Quarenghi had a hand in its creation. The estate was created in 1790-1800 for the grandee of Empress Catherine S.B. Kurakina.
The Lord’s House is a two-storey building with a mezzanine, having a semicircular colonnade and a portico with 4 semi-columns and a figure attic. In the old days, the house was surrounded by a flowering garden, lime trees and fir trees grew here.
Interestingly, Stepan Borisovich Kurakin had a reputation as a reveler and mota, while his life ended prematurely, and the estate passed into the possession of his relatives. During his lifetime, the house was a real haven for the bohemians of those years - poets and artists, court musicians, cooks, lackeys and valets. Moreover, there was a town of cards, a theater, bakeries, gates, kalanchas and obelisks, but all this went into oblivion, because it was made of short-lived materials.
After the revolution, warehouses and a granary were located in the palace. Restoration work is currently underway at the estate.
