Dormition Cathedral
Embankment Athanasiya Nikitina, 20, Tver
Description:
The Assumption Cathedral in Tver is the only thing left of the Otroch monastery, which was located on the embankment of Athanasius Nikitin. The monastery complex was built in 1722 on the initiative of Peter the Great on the site of the ancient cathedral of the XIII century. Today, his remains can be found on the lower levels of the cathedral. The construction was supervised by Metropolitan Sylvester Kraisky, who was specially transferred to Tver from Smolensk for these purposes.
At the base of the cathedral was laid a Latin cross with faceted sleeves. Brick walls were plastered, door and window openings were decorated with white-stone casings. Over time, the sacristy of the Assumption Cathedral was changed into an altar in the name of Seraphim of Sarov. In the architectural appearance of the cathedral, you can trace the elements of tectonics and decoration of the facades, characteristic of late Peter’s time, but also similar to similar elements of the XIII-XIV centuries in the architecture of the Smolensk churches. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with a complex plot tempera mural.
