Goat Museum

Tver, Zhelyabova str., 33 (building of Tver branch of RSUH)

About the company:

In Tver in the building of the Tver branch of RSUH on Zhelyabov Street there is an unusual Museum of the Goat. In the city it appeared relatively recently, the opening of the museum took place in the autumn of 2008. In Tver, this animal is very popular. Since the XIII century, the city was famous for its production of various products from goat skins. Until the end of the XVIII century, this city remained the largest and almost the only supplier of isolated goat skins in the whole country. In Tver was the only Safyanaya Sloboda of its kind. Residents of this small area were engaged in a special manufacture of skins from the skins of young goats, which was then used for sewing safyan boots by order of the royal court. The expositions of the Tver Museum tell about various enterprises and manufactories that operated in the city at different periods of time.

Here you can see about five hundred exhibits, which are somehow associated with the goat. These are a variety of products from the skins of this animal, stuffed effigies, various goat figurines and various souvenirs from different countries, goat sculptures and much more. Interestingly, for people whose surname is derived from the name of this animal – for example, Kozlov or Kozodoev – entrance is free.

All guests of the museum are greeted by its owner, the Goat, who treats everyone with goat’s milk and special gingerbread goats. In order to get inside, you have to like it. To do this, you will have to put a bandana on your head with horns and ears, and hang a goat bell around your neck. Visiting this museum you will learn many interesting legends and beliefs of the Tver region, as well as why the inhabitants of Tver are called “Tver goats”.
