Museum of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin

Tver region, Tver, str. Fishing, 11

About the company:

The country’s first literary museum of the satirist writer M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin was opened in Tver for its 150th anniversary. The expositions of the museum are located in the memorial house on Rybatskaya Street, in which Saltykov-Shchedrin lived for two years, being the vice-governor of Tver.

The museum was created according to the project of the Moscow artist Yuri Kercelli, who took art panels made by Valery Chumakov as the basis of the main exhibition. These panels represent a kind of “windows” into the world of Russia of the XIX century, conveying the modern perception of the life and work of Saltykov-Shchedrin as a writer, public figure and a kind of Russian official, who has always sincerely cared about the fate of Russia. Against the background of these panels and built the main exposition of the museum. It consists of several rooms and halls of an ancient two-storey mansion, built in the early XVII century.

The owners themselves lived on the first floor, where now there are restored interiors of past centuries, and the second floor was rented out. In the period from 1860 to 1862, M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin lived here with his wife Elizabeth Apollonovna.
