Water tower

ooh Ordzhonikidze, 56/2, Tyumen, Tyumen region, Russia

Description:

The water tower is a high-rise dominant of the historical center of Tyumen, a significant element of the functional and planning structure of the city, as well as a compositional accent in the surrounding buildings and a characteristic example of industrial architecture. It was built in 1914-1916. The tower is a monumental, eight-sided, five-tiered structure with elements of defensive architecture. The latter are most expressively manifested in a three-dimensional form, reminiscent of the medieval donjon tower, as well as in the decor of the expanded upper tier, decorated with stylized teeth.

Arched light windows of the tower do not violate the monolithic walls, enriching them with plastic. The uppermost tier of the structure is cut with vertical slit-shaped openings resembling the holes of loopholes. From the western facade, a narrow quadrangular volume of the inner staircase is attached almost to the entire height of the tower. The height of the tower is about 25 meters, at the beginning of the century it was the tallest structure in Tyumen.
