Znamensky Cathedral
Description:
Znamensky Cathedral is the main and one of the oldest Orthodox churches of Tyumen. It is considered one of the most beautiful temples, which with its architecture amazes guests of the city and local residents. The total complexity of the cathedral was built almost 150 years, but for so many years it is made in a single original style, not succumbing to the changing fashion of different eras.
The first church on this site was built in 1624 in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”. It was wooden and completely burned down during one of the city fires. The stone church was founded in 1768. It consisted of a porch with round columns, a porch with a bell tower above it, a refectory and the main temple. Icons for the flag church were painted by two local masters of painting - the Tyumen philistine E.K. Solomatov and the Tobolsk painter Yamskan F.I. Cherepanov.
The church was reconstructed from cold to warm in December 1850. In addition, simultaneously with the reconstruction of the Znamenskaya Church, a garden was planted in the church fence, and two chapels were added to the church itself in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Speaker” and in the name of St. John Chrysostom. Today, the Znamensky Cathedral is a complex, but holistic and harmonious structure in the rare style of Russian Baroque in Siberia. The main shrine of the cathedral is the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”, revered as miraculous. Several years ago, the rector of the cathedral, Archpriest Valery Gordeev, returned four bells to the bell tower, which were located on the Far Eastern lighthouses of the Primorsky Territory.
