Historical and Literary Museum of I.A. Goncharov

The historical and literary museum of I. A. Goncharov is the only museum of the great writer in Russia. The museum was opened on June 17, 1982 in the house where the future great novelist was born. The museum introduces the life and work of the writer: Simbirsk childhood, study in Moscow, departure of 22-year-old Goncharov to St. Petersburg, etc. In the halls there are materials telling about the emergence and history of the creation of novels “Ordinary History”, “Oblomov”, “The Cliff”. The first editions of the novels and critical reviews about them, illustrations, letters, photographs and portraits of Goncharov and his contemporaries are presented. In addition to the largest collection of authentic things in the country by the writer and members of the Goncharov family, the museum presents household items and furniture of the XIX century, manuscripts, rare books.
