Church of the Great Martyr Catherine

street of Labor, 2a, Valdai, Novgorod region

Description:

The church appeared in 1786. The initiator of the construction was Catherine II. The Queen made a tidy sum for the cause. At first glance, the church looked like a rotunda. It was made as a palace temple, although services in it almost did not take place. The author of the project was architect N.A. Lvov. He built a circular building surrounded by tall white columns. The style of construction is strict classicism.

At present, only individual buildings and a church remain from the Catherine buildings. The latter has been reconstructed several times. At the beginning of the XX century, the temple was declared a historical monument. In 1970, the building was transferred to the local museum. After another 15 years, the Church of the Great Martyr Catherine occupied the museum of bells, which works to this day.
