Historical sketch

Founded in 1593 as a fortress city at the confluence of the Oskol River Valuy (modern Valuyka), it was often attacked by the Crimean Tatars.

The name of the hydronym, which in the document 1491 is referred to as Volui, in the 17th century. in the forms of Volui, Valui. Presumably, the hydronym is formed from the ancient Russian adjective "volovy, bull", and accompanying this definition of the geographical term river (spout, well) was lost over time. The common etymology of the Kursk, Orel Valuy "man is lethargic, clumsy, lazy, razinya, rotosaic" is less convincing.

In 1699, while traveling to Azov, Valuyki was visited by Peter I, at whose expense and according to his own plan, a cathedral church of the Meeting of the Vladimir Mother of God was built.

In 1707, the city suffered greatly when it was captured by the troops of K.A. Bulavin.

Since 1797 the county city of Voronezh province. At the end of the 19th century. operated leather, distillery, 2 oil mills.
