History of Novgorod through the eyes of an archaeologist
Description:
The creation of one of the best historical expositions in Russia became possible thanks to the systematic archaeological study of Novgorod, which began in 1932 and continues today. The largest Nerev and Trinity excavations, which studied the central estates of ancient Novgorod, brought exceptional archaeological finds. In 1965-1967, the Department of Archaeology of Moscow State University and the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR transferred to the Novgorod Museum a large archaeological collection of materials from the Nerevsky and Ilyinsky excavations, which made it possible to fully reveal the issues of material culture of medieval Novgorod. On the basis of these collections in 1975, the historical and archaeological exposition “History of Novgorod and the Novgorod Territory (from ancient times to the XVII century)” was opened. The authors of the thematic and exposition plan were L.I. Petrova and V.L. Yanin, the artist was V.E. Baklan. The layout of the halls is subject to the logic of the exposition display of the most important stages of the historical development of the Novgorod land. In chronological terms, the exposition of the Novgorod Museum reflects the history of the Novgorod land from the Stone Age to the New Time (late XVII century). The design of the exposition and historical plot paintings of vaults based on the miniatures of the Chronicle Facial Vault were made by artists of the Leningrad Plant of Painting and Decorative Art. Leading historians and archaeologists took an active part in the creation of the exposition: V.L. Yanin, B.A. Kolchin, A.S. Khoroshev, E.A. Rybina. The exposition presents more than two thousand items of the X – XVII centuries from the funds of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve.
