Homeland of Russia - a car excursion to the Rurikovo settlement

“Already at the dawn of Russian history, we owe the Novgorod people the fact that we are as we are – the fact that we are Russian,” wrote academician Dmitry Likhachev. It is impossible to overestimate the role of Novgorod in the formation of the Russian state. In the immediate vicinity of the city 2 kilometers upstream of the Volkhov River on its right bank rises a hill called Rurikovo settlement. It was this place that was destined to become a political, administrative and commercial center, uniting scattered tribal unions of Slavs and Finno-Ugrians. It was here that Rurik was invited in 862. Visiting the Rurikovo settlement, we will have the opportunity to visit the historical homeland of Russia, from where unimaginable views of the source of the Volkhov open, which will allow us to understand the importance of the geographical location.

In the era of the Novgorod Republic, the settlement turns into a princely residence, the Church of the Annunciation was erected at the beginning of the XII century.
