Veliky Novgorod

Monastery

Russia, Veliky Novgorod, St. park

Description:

According to the first Novgorod chronicle, the Antoniev Monastery was founded in 1117, the construction was completed two years later. Its founder was the Monk Anthony of Rome.

Amazing legends tell about the appearance of the founder of the monastery. During the prayer of Anthony, a piece of rock on which the monk stood broke off, and on this stone he reached the Novgorod land. Antony saw God’s providence in this, and on the place where the waters of the Volkhov River brought him, he decided to found a monastery.

The main temple of the monastery is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. There are many attractions on the territory of the complex. These include 6 mosaic icons of the 12th century, a cane of sea grass, which St. Anthony allegedly held in his hands when he arrived in Novgorod, as well as a piece of stone on which the monk sailed.

In 1920 the monastery was abolished. Today on this territory there are faculties of Novgorod State University named after Yaroslav the Wise.
