The Church of Andrew Stratilat

Russia, Novgorod, on the territory of the Kremlin.

Description:

This small church appeared in the southeastern part of the Novgorod Kremlin at the end of the XVII century and was consecrated in honor of Andrei Stratilat. According to the results of archaeological research in 1969, it was found that this temple was built on the site of the once existing Cathedral of Boris and Gleb (1167 - 1173).

To this day, the inner stair tower has been preserved, and the construction itself was attributed to the merchant Sotko Sytnich, associated with the hero of epics - Sadko. The church of Andrei Stratilat is a white-stone structure with a roof on two stingrays and a small cupola on a deaf faceted drum. The single-span belfry rises above the pediment of the western facade.

Of great cultural interest is the preserved frescoes of the XVI century. In the northern part of the temple, on the wall, there is a procession of saints, including Andrew Stratilat, and in the western part – the Virgin and the biblical King David. The partially preserved composition “The Ascension of Christ” is located in the western part of the upper register, and in the southern part – the Twelve Apostles, depicted in full growth and the Mother of God with two angels.
