Paraskeva-Friday Church on Trade
Russia, Veliky Novgorod, St. Large Moscow, 5b
Description:
Church of the Great Martyr Paraskeva, located on the trading side of Veliky Novgorod between St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Church of the Assumption. It is a unique building, as it became one of the first buildings of the XIII century, having an unusual pyramidal appearance for that time.
The first wooden church was built in the middle of the XII century in honor of the patroness of Novgorod merchants Paraskeva-Friday. It was thanks to merchants who often visited various Russian lands and Europe that new solutions for the construction of various buildings began to appear in Novgorod architecture of the late XII - early XIII centuries.
During the construction of the Paraskeva-Friday church on the Trade, the masters departed from the traditional Byzantine canons, as a result of which the new temple stood out among the rest both by its external cruciform appearance and internal interior.
The church burned many times, which is why it was often rebuilt and today has a very different appearance from the original, which does not reduce its historical value and beauty.
