Church of Vlasiya on Volos Street
Russia, Veliky Novgorod, Bolshaya Vlasievskaya Street, house 2
Description:
Vlasiya Church on Volosovaya Street is a church in Veliky Novgorod. It is located near the Novgorod Detinets. It stands at the intersection of three streets: Volosova, Vlasievskaya and Bolshaya Vlasievskaya. It is assumed that on the site of the church in ancient times was the sanctuary of the pagan god Veles. However, the chronicles already in 1111 report the finding of a wooden church dedicated to Vlasius. The white stone church we see today was built in 1407.
The name of the church was associated with the Holy Martyr Vlasius, who in Russia has always been the patron saint of cattle. In the XIX century, the church underwent minor changes and restructurings. It suffered greatly during the Great Patriotic War and was almost destroyed. With the help of restoration works, the church regained its historical appearance.
