Victory monument

Description:

The central figure of the monument is a bronze sculpture of a standing horse and a rider sitting on it, which personifies a Russian/Soviet warrior. In the right hand, the rider holds a high-raised sword, the left, with an outstretched palm, stretched forward and down. Under the belly of the horse is a defeated, twisted swastika. The total weight of the horse and rider is 27 tons, the height is 8 m. The sculpture stands on a massive meter pedestal, which, in turn, stands on a granite platform with a height of 3 m and an area of 120 m&sup2.

Behind the sculpture is a monumental brick tower with a height of 23.5 m and a base size of 6.5×8.5 m. At the top of the tower there is a boat, lined around the perimeter with ancient military attributes (shields, spears, etc.). On the walls of the tower there are four massive bas-reliefs, covering the main stages of the Great Patriotic War and the victorious battles of the Red Army for the liberation of Novgorod. The total height of the tower along with the rook is 34.5 m. Inside the tower there is a spiral staircase that leads to the balcony and to the specified boat. The granite pedestal under the sculpture also has internal rooms, access to which is closed. In the following years, the monument repeatedly suffered from the actions of vandals and thieves who were collecting non-ferrous metals. May 5, 2006 on the "Victory Monument" opened the restored plates, which indicate all units of the Red Army, distinguished in the defense and liberation of the city.

Victory Monument is the only equestrian statue in Veliky Novgorod. Several times on the horse tried to climb some citizens.
