Victory Square

Russia, Veliky Novgorod, central part of the city

Description:

Victory Square is the central square of Veliky Novgorod. It is located between the Kremlin and the regional administration building. There are also the building of the Museum of Fine Arts (formerly the Noble Assembly) and the monument to Lenin.

In the center of the square, next to the Kremlin wall, all the main city festivities and concerts take place.

In fact, the square has a double name - Victory-Sofia. Sofia it was called initially, from the moment of construction in the 30s of the XIX century. After the Great Patriotic War, the square was called Victory.

In 1991, when it came to our country to return the old names of cities, streets, squares, Victory Square was renamed again in Sofia. However, this fact caused the indignation of veterans, and in 2005, when the country celebrated 60 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the city authorities found a compromise and left the square with a double name.
