Yurievskoye highway, Veliky Novgorod, Novgorod region

Description:

Yuriev Monastery is one of the oldest in Russia, and in size is second only to the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod. It is the property of medieval architecture and is officially included in cultural heritage sites.

Anyone who wishes can visit the monastery. It was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church on December 25, 1991 and has been active ever since. Thanks to the expanding brotherhood, the monastery complex and its decoration are restored.

Yuriev Monastery is located on the Volkhov River in Veliky Novgorod. The date of foundation is considered the date of consecration in 1030. It is the first Orthodox monastery of Novgorod lands.

The history of the foundation leads to Yaroslav the Wise. He was baptized by George in honor of George the Victorious. And after his victory over the chud decided to build churches and found a city in honor of St. George - Yuri. The city of Yuriev is now called Tartu and is located in Estonia. And temples were built in Kiev and Novgorod.

Initially, the monastery was completely wooden and only in 1119 the first stone temple was laid. In the same year, for the first time, written references to the temple can be found. Its special significance was emphasized by the fact that it was used as a tomb of the princes of Novgorod.

Unfortunately, the original frescoes of the wooden temple are practically not preserved. In 1902, during the reconstruction, almost all the frescoes were rewritten.
