Excursion to Veliky Novgorod: - the first capital of Ancient Russia. Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest cities in Russia, located at the origins of the Volkhov River and Lake Ilmen. Novgorod is rightly called the city-museum of Ancient Russia. There are many monuments of architecture and monumental painting of the XI-XVII centuries.

Acquaintance with the city will begin from the left Sofia side – the Novgorod Kremlin. The ancient name of the Kremlin complex is Detinets, it was founded by Yaroslav the Wise in 1044. Detinets is the oldest defensive structure in Russia, 9 of the 13 towers of the Kremlin have survived to this day. St. Sophia Cathedral is one of the most outstanding monuments of ancient Russian architecture, where unique fragments of the original painting on the central dome and in the Martirievskaya porch have been preserved. The main shrines of the cathedral are the ancient miraculous icons of the Mother of God the Sign, the icon Sophia the Wisdom of God, the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.

We will continue our acquaintance with Novgorod at the Yaroslavl Palace and the ancient Novgorod trade. The trade side got its name from the trade located on it, which was the economic center of the city. Shopping rows are the busiest place in the city, in the XVI century.

There were barns and shops, trade was boiling. Immediately behind the Trading there were “yards”, where merchants came from all corners of the world. In the XVII - XVIII centuries. on the site of the trade was built Gostiny Dvor. Here are architectural monuments of Veliky Novgorod - the Nikolo-Noble Cathedral, the Church of Procopia, the Church of Paraskeva Friday, the Church of the Assumption, the Church of George.

The museum allows you to plunge into the atmosphere of the medieval city, get acquainted with the life and traditional salt-making of the inhabitants of Staraya Russa. At the moment, visitors are presented to the view: a vat place consisting of a unique operating vat with a woodcutter, an operating barn with a grazing for livestock, a Russian bath in black, a complex of residential buildings (a large residential hut connected by hays with a wall), a cooling tower (constructed recently; a device for extracting salt by evaporation, thickening salt solution) elements of urban improvement (frequency, wooden pavement), as well as several buildings for economic purposes.

The layout, location, configuration, size of the buildings are reproduced based on real data of archaeological excavations in Staraya Russa. Scientists have tried to recreate the yard of the saltwater as reliably as possible.

The pride of the museum is a salt plant. The brine extracted from Old Russian mineral springs was fed to Varnitsa. These were wooden rooms in which salt was boiled. Here they installed an oven over which the cren was hung - a kind of evaporation pan. The fire was constantly kept in the oven, the brine boiled. The work of the solarium was complex, required skill, experience and remarkable strength. The master with assistants prepared the cren for cooking, monitored the state of boiling brine, removed dirt, scale, captured the moment when salt began to form. The resulting salt was raked and dried.

Souvenir salt, which is sold in the estate, is also evaporated from the old Russian mineral water. Water for the preparation of this salt is taken in the Tsaritsyn mineral spring.
