Procopia of the Righteous

Cathedral Palace, Great Ustyug, Vologda region, Russian Federation

Description:

The Cathedral of Procopius the Righteous, built in honor of the heavenly patron of the Great Ustyug, is one of the monuments of the Cathedral Palace. Saint Procopius, born in the XIII century in Germany, adopted Orthodoxy and remained forever in Russia. As his spiritual path, he chose the most difficult feat of Christian piety – foolery for Christ’s sake and became famous for his miracles, such as saving Ustyug from the destruction of stone clouds. In 1547, Procopius was listed as a saint.

The Cathedral in honor of Saint Procopius was built in 1668 at the expense of the merchant Athanasius Guselnikov. A stone temple was erected over the resting place of the relics of the saint. In the Pisces Book of 1676-1683 preserved a detailed description of the cathedral, which had five chapters with gilded crosses and a bell tower. The cathedral was built by local master Peter Kotelnikov, and for almost three centuries the church was rebuilt more than once.

The main value of the cathedral is a luxurious carved five-tier iconostasis covered with gilding. It was built in the 1st half of the XVIII century, and in the 80-90s of the XX century the iconostasis and wall paintings were restored and continue to please the eye of numerous visitors.
