Veliky Ustyug

Cathedral courtyard

Veliky Ustyug, Vologda region, Russian Federation

Description:

The cathedral courtyard is the oldest part of Veliky Ustyug, the spiritual center of the city. Here, on the high left bank of the Sukhona River, there is a unique complex of temples erected in the period from the XVII to the XIX century: the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cathedral of St. Procopius the Righteous, the Cathedral of St. John the Righteous, the Church of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Church of Alexy, the Metropolitan of Moscow, as well as the Bishops’ Compound.

In compositional terms, the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Palace of the Great Ustyug is a fairly typical example of ancient Russian urban planning. In the center of the composition is the square, dominated by numerous religious buildings. Each of the temples located on the square is perfectly visible from almost any point. Due to this, the internal space of the square, having a clear planning structure, looks harmonious and picturesque.

The special charm and beauty of the Cathedral courtyard of the Great Ustyug gives its location on the high beautiful bank of the Sukhona River. It seems to open its arms towards the river expanses, and each of the buildings is harmoniously inscribed in the surrounding landscape. Visiting this beautiful place, without a doubt, you will feel a surprisingly subtle and organic connection of ancient monuments of architecture with nature.
