The Transfiguration Church

Vologda region, Great Ustyug

Description:

The Sretensky-Transfiguration Church is part of the complex of buildings of the Spaso - Transfiguration Monastery. This temple was first mentioned in historical sources dating from 1630. In 1679, the wooden church was destroyed by fire, as was the neighboring Transfiguration Church. The stone temple was built only a few decades later.

The Church of Cretnia deserves to be recognized as one of the best examples of local cult architecture of the second half of the XVIII century. A distinctive feature of the building is that in its upper tiers a tier of bell ringing was provided - such churches were called "under the bells". The inner space of the Sretensky Church is decorated with a small two-tiered iconostasis of the late XVIII - early XIX century, richly decorated with numerous decorative elements.

Until 1764, the Sretensky Church was used as a warm temple of the Spaso-Transfiguration convent located here. After the monastery was abolished, the church was converted to the parish.
