Verea

Monument to Dorokhov I.S

Description:

In the city of Verey, on the settlement, at the highest point near the Christmas Cathedral, a monument to the hero of the war of 1812, Lieutenant-General Ivan Semenovich Dorokhov is installed. What distinguished Dorokhov and why in his honor not only a monument, but also named a village in the Ruza district, sanatorium, streets in many suburban cities and the city of Moscow? Given the strategic importance of Verea, the French command stationed a strong garrison here. Driven by the bayonets of the invaders, the townspeople and peasants of the surrounding villages began to strengthen the fortress. The earthen rampart was raised, a new oak palisade was put up, the underground passage leading to the shore of Protva was repaired. Devastation and hunger, looting and violence of the French marauders encouraged the inhabitants to take up arms and go to the forests. Some of the forests were considered impassable at the time. The liberation of Verea from the French and the elimination of the fortifications erected by them here could contribute to the freedom of maneuver of the army guerrilla detachments behind enemy lines, in the immediate vicinity of the Smolensk road. The defeat of the Vera garrison of Napoleonic troops was entrusted to M.I. Kutuzov, Major-General I.S. Dorokhov.
