About the local history museum in Vetluga

Vetluga Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest museums of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The resolution of the Vetluga Revolutionary Military Council of October 28, 1918 “On the opening of the museum of the local region” determined the status of the museum. The founder and first director of the museum was Ivan Ivanovich Razumov. I.I. Razumov graduated from St. Petersburg University, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, was able to make stuffed animals that have been preserved in the exposition to our time. The basis of the museum collection was the exhibits of the museum of the male gymnasium and the personal belongings of the organizer. In the first years of its existence, the museum had mainly educational direction and consisted of several classrooms: geographical, physical, geological, natural sciences. I.I. Razumov himself was a teacher and conducted training classes in the museum.

The main reorientation of the museum to local history began in 1930 Since 1982, the museum is located in a two-storey stone building built at the end of the XIX century. The former building of the city government on the central street of the city is a monument of history and culture of regional importance. Before a person who decided to visit the museum, the gates of ancient work hospitably open. And here is a small cozy lobby, from which you can get into the amazing world of nature of the Vetluga region. The artist V.N. Kuranov developed and executed dioramas. They delight visitors with the skill of execution and allow you to visit four seasons at once. It is impossible to pass indifferently past the collection of butterflies collected by entomologist L.N.Uspensky and past a very rare find – the Vetluga meteorite.

On the second floor, in the central exhibition hall, you can see household items of the local nobility, weapons of the time of Peter I, which fell into the museum from former estates and landlords' houses. Here, in the exhibition hall, art exhibitions are held.

From the exhibition hall you go to the hall of peasant life. The museum carefully collects and preserves everyday objects of Russian antiquity. Less and less are now found in the life of man-made utensils of our ancestors. And the museum is the only opportunity to see with your own eyes the wooden sokha, stone millstones, weaving mill, homespun festive sundress, lapti, tools for the production of rolled shoes and much more. From the hall of peasant life you enter the world of Orthodox Vetluga. The exposition “Orthodox Vetluga” acquaints with the tragic fate of churches and clergy of our region. Most of the fourth hall is occupied by the exposition about the Great Patriotic War. More than 16 thousand veterans went to the front, more than 8 thousand fell in the battles for the Motherland. Officers and privates, home front workers – all of them should remain in the memory of the people and in the archives of our museum. The life of the district in the post-revolutionary period was also reflected in the museum exposition. This tour of the museum halls ends. The museum continues to live its own life: along with the requirements of the time, its exposition changes, is transformed, replenished.

Visitors can not only get acquainted with the museum, but also work with books and documents of the museum fund.
