The Darial Gorge is the Alan Gate, or Gate of the Caucasus. The gorge is a passage through the Main Caucasian Range, a natural fault of the mountain range along which the Terek River flows. The depth of the gorge is up to 1000 m, along it passes the Georgian Military Road. The gorge is mentioned in the works of many Russian writers and poets, depicted in the paintings of many famous artists.
