City of the Dead - Dargaves

City of the Dead Dargaves - unusual places on the planet. The village of Dargavs is very rich in various architectural monuments, especially known for its battle towers and the “city of the dead”. On the banks of the Wallagdon River is the Mamsurov Tower, 16 m high, despite the fact that the upper part of the tower is destroyed, it impresses with its size and impeccable quality of masonry. The Alikov Tower rises above the “city of the dead”, a kilometer from the village, on the slope of Mount Raminirag. Dargavssky "City of the Dead" is a complex of 95 family crypts of different sizes, in which Ossetians from the XIV buried the dead. The dead were not buried in the ground, but laid in a crypt, brought inside through a window. The window was then closed with a wooden shield. Each crypt is a small plastered stone house with an insular roof in the form of a multi-stage pyramid lined with slate tiles. The above-ground part is just the tip of the iceberg: there are deep pits under many buildings. When all the side shelves of the crypt were filled with the dead, the remains were lowered down, making room for new burials. Thus, more than a hundred dead were placed in one crypt. These “dead houses” also served as a quarantine. Historical chronicles show that at the height of the plague, families in which the disease came, closed in the crypts and lived there their last days. Graves were placed on elevated slopes, blown by all winds, so that the corpses did not rot, but mummified. The dead were decorated, burial gifts were placed nearby, partially preserved to this day. Some of the mummified bodies are also pretty well preserved. So, in one of the crypts, archaeologists found the remains of a woman in a robe of Iranian silk. The size of the necropolis proves that Dargavs was a large village in the past. It was home to wealthy mountain families who could afford large crypts with deep underground wells.

Midagrabin Falls

This peculiar valley of waterfalls is located in the upper reaches of the Giseldon gorge. They fall from a great height, they give the impression of falling from the sky. The largest Midagrabinsk waterfall was called the Big Zaygelan Falling Avalanche. According to geological data, the height of the continuous fall of the waterfall is 750 m. Midagrabinsky waterfalls belong to the class of high-altitudes. Big Zaygelan in terms of water fall height is the first in Europe and is among the five highest waterfalls-altitudes of the planet.

Carmadon Gorge with thermal springs.

Karmadon Gorge, a unique monument of nature, a beautiful corner of Ossetia and a favorite vacation spot for both locals and tourists from all over Russia and even from abroad. People wanted to get here to admire the unique mountain landscapes, enjoy the smell of alpine herbs, visit the famous Carmadon springs. Without much difficulty, you could walk along the moraines to the tongue of the Miley glacier, explore the grotto from which Genaldon originates. Things don't look like that now... On September 20, 2002, the Kolka glacier descended in the Karmadon Gorge. As a result, 19 people died. Another 106 people, including the crew of Sergei Bodrov Jr., who worked in North Ossetia, were missing. Their bodies have not yet been found. At the site of the tragedy is now a memorial... And people are still working in the gorge: they are clearing the road and continuing their search. It is interesting and creepy to be in the gorge: long, dark tunnels cut like a razor of the river banks, and huge heaps of soil ... With roaring, roaring, drowning out not only human voices, but all sounds in general, with a terrible roaring rolling huge stones, the murky and terrible Genaldon rushes through the gorge, now its waters are replenished by a melting glacier.
